How are you going to do a put-down on Midwest emo and accuse Turnover of being the poster boy, and not The Hotelier? Strawman! Forreal though I went back through my library and realized that there's not really an album from the genre that I love unabashedly since Goodness, so I guess I'll concede the point.
Really looking forward to listening through this. I have also been listening to that tiny yawn record on repeat this year, shoving it down friends' throats, and publicizing it as much as possible. It's such a much-needed warm hug in these times (saying that as a certified Midwest US-er).
Aha yep you've got me there, definitely a missed opportunity to frame the Hotelier as the (holds nose) Madonna to Turnover's whore. Whoops. But hope those other tracks do it for you + hooray for Tiny Yawn forever (have you heard their latest? not quite the same level, but thought it had a couple of Moments)
Yes I went through it once a while ago and yes it didn't really jump out at me like paddle ship did, but I'm overdue to revisit it shortly. Making a concerted effort to keep up with new music this year has been an adhd nightmare.
Finished this playlist with a ream of new albums in my backlog (ugggghh). 'cycling' is the clear standout for me on the Japanese side although there were no misses, honorable mention to MIYAKO. For the rest it was another reminder that I still need to hear that BIBI album although that cut was profoundly motivating to that end, CMAT was very "I like this in a never-going-to-listen-again kind of way", and the electro portion was so very my cup of tea with 'By Your Side' being a slight (and probably just simply more immediate) standout although I really loved all of them. Sublime playlist and entertaining writeups as always.
Gawjus stuff. Mini-essay on the Bibi track is just tops, looking forward to hearing some of these
