A Man For All Seasons is an immensely depressing album.
A Man For All Seasons is exceptionally beautiful and chock full of earworms.
Both statements are true - of course, melding brooding sentiments with ebullient backdrops is the oldest trick in the musical playbook, but rarely among recent releases has this contrast been more striking than here. Insecure Men’s second full-length is inspired by frontman Saul Adamczewski’s battle with addiction, his subsequent hospitalization, and ensuing recovery, and sees these themes channeled into simultaneously heartbreaking and gorgeous songs - whether it be the infectiously catchy strut of “Cleaning Bricks”, the crooning country-folk of “Tulse Hill Station”, or the mellow lounge-pop of “Alien”. Lovelorn laments of broken lives and dreamed-for deaths come wrapped in pristine psych-drenched indie pop with just a glowing hint of twang carried on the wind. The darkness is omnipresent, but stays mostly just out of sight, content to openly bare its fangs at selected moments, a la the nightmarish half-wails at the end of “Butter”. This is a concise album without any obvious letdowns, making for a very satisfying listen, but most of all it tastefully blends a retro spirit with a bleakly modern outlook. Charming stuff.
