REVIEW: Gutrectomy - Slamdown is not a phase, Mom

Is the current metal landscape too self-serious for your taste? Is it also not stupidly heavy enough to keep the goblin in your brain feeling sufficiently insane? Do you only have a little over 10 mins to get your fix in? Then boy howdy, do I have an EP for you.
Just in case the EP title and track lengths weren’t enough of a giveaway, this is slam. It’s death metal’s brutish, uncomplicated cousin, delivered through Gutrectomy’s heavy-set deathcore lens (with additional contribution from cult favourites Guttural Slug, beatdown up-and-comers No Face No Case, and the appropriately named Nekropisser), full to the eye-watering brim with chunky grooves and monstrous drops.
For such a brief release, Slamdown crams a surprising amount of unhinged mania into its short runtime, the bitesize tracks flitting between pummelling slams and hypnotic, bouncy riffs at a spinkick’s notice, all tied together with disgusting, boiler-room-of-hell vocals. Where many modern slam releases blur into a single extended breakdown, Gutrectomy consistently find ways to recontextualise their grooves, and that alone helps keep the EP memorable despite its brevity.
It’s all incredibly simplistic stuff, but it doesn’t waste a second of its aggressive barrage, with an overpowering yet consistently tight production style absolutely overloaded with memorable sidesteps. Seriously, how many records can you think of in this style that take ten seconds out to play a sample from the Macarena before subjecting you to the most hilariously overdriven bass drop I’ve heard this year (“Sledgehammer Dismemberment”)? If you’re aware of another, please let me know.
It’s Gutrectomy giddily dialling the fun up to redline levels on all fronts, and although your mileage will vary depending on how willing you are to allow silliness and memes into your playlist, what it sets out to do it absolutely nails. You’ll smirk, you’ll stankface… you may even replay it a couple or ten times.
Hang up the battle vest for ten minutes and give this a quick spin.
