REVIEW: Grivo - Impose

sludgy gazers awake from hibernation and discover americana

Grivo are, in my humble opinion, cool as hell. Every four years, the Texan band unleashes a grand, sludgy-yet-vibey gazefest of an album without much fanfare. Simultaneously, they manage to give each project its own distinct identity: while 2022’s excellent Omit leaned deeper into the drawn-out, darker sounds hinted at on Elude four years prior, the fresh and aptly-titled Impose blends the leftover gloom with some glimpses of Americana and earthly indie rock.

Across its six tracks, the record remains focused enough to prevent the thick, mid paced dreamgaze from turning into a homogeneous mass. The towering “Sunset Receipt” manages to be catchy in spite of and due to its gigantic buildups, while closing cut “Heaven Howls” is an unassuming indie rocker in disguise. This latter song’s textures bleed and bend into an eight-minute epic that feels heavy yet weightless at once. However, the very best moments here might just be enveloped in the title track: “Impose” can only be described as a sludgy, country-infused post-shoegaze triumph. Somehow, it works amazingly, with each moment brilliantly complementing the next.

From beautifully apathetic vocals to genuinely imposing riffs run through a hazy filter, Impose has approximately everything you could be looking for in a shoegaze-adjacent record: don’t sleep on it, since we’ll probably hit the 2030s before we get the next Grivo album.
