Welcome, dear readers, to another edition of ̶G̶r̶o̶t̶e̶s̶q̶u̶e̶ DOOM Digest. Normally, these posts are compiled by process of elimination, so you’d find only the releases we’ve deemed recommendable here. Listening to somber guitar music for hours and hours has taken its toll though, and the best way to cope is to share; thus most DOOM-adjacent releases that came out this week will be included in a separate section at the beginning of the list. Out of those, the only ones I’m likely to revisit are the works by Evoken, Perishing, Azell, and Wolvennest - probably in that order (but then Celephais dropped a fun demo mere hours after the post went live).
Moving away from the GLOOM, there’s little in the way of highlight-worthy albums this week. The new Coroner is a thing that exists now, I guess, and Internal Bleeding have returned, but frankly, it’s hard to get excited over either of them. If you’re looking for some good thrash, you’d be better off checking out Atonement, GraveRipper, or Wild Beyond instead, and on the core-y/gurgle-slam DM side, Tribal Gaze, Iniquity of Hate, or Expurge may be worth your time. Personally, I’d much rather listen to something like Death Reich or, if the BM mood strikes, Penthos, but nothing really blew me away.
This week’s singles, on the other hand, were very uplifting. Not content with releasing just one full-length (and a split) this year, Sulfuric Cautery dropped one hell of a goregrind-infused BDM track off their upcoming second 2025 album a few days ago. Consider my expectations fueled. Osmose came through earlier this morning, blessing us with another excellent teaser for The Ominous Circle’s Through Tunnels Ablaze. Then there’s promising new material from Inverecund, Møl, and Zu. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to rinse off all this DOOMy misery with some grindcore.
